Miata Koyo Radiator and Koyo K-Swap Radiator: What 200 Installations Taught Me

Let me give you the answer you came for: a Koyo radiator is the single most reliable cooling upgrade for a Miata or a K-swapped Miata. After more than 200 radiator installations over six years, it's the only brand I recommend without a caveat. But—and this is the part nobody mentions—the radiator is rarely the component that breaks the build. Fitment, hoses, and the shortcuts people take around the cooling system are where the real damage happens.

I'm the tech who's handled Koyo radiator orders for a two-man Japanese car specialist shop in Portland since 2019. I've personally made five significant mistakes, totaling roughly $3,100 in wasted parts and disappointed customers. This article is the checklist I wish somebody handed me on day one.

The copper vs. aluminum belief I had to unlearn

Everything I'd read about radiators said copper cores transfer heat better than aluminum. In theory, yes. In practice—at least on a Miata with a built and boosted BP—the aluminum Koyo cooled a full 12 degrees better than the freshly recored copper unit in our shop's back-to-back test in 2021. The conventional wisdom wasn't wrong. It was just incomplete. That experience is why I now tell customers to focus on the coolant flow path and core design, not the metal.

Miata Koyo radiator: 37mm or 55mm

Koyo makes two main radiators for the NA/NB Miata. The 37mm is a direct replacement for the stock unit and is honestly enough for a daily-driven car or a mild autocross build. The 55mm is the track-oriented part—roughly double the coolant volume, noticeably better heat rejection, but you'll likely need slim fans to make it fit with the crossmember. The 37mm outsells the 55mm two to one at our shop, and that ratio is fine for most people.

Here's where I got burned. A customer called in early 2022, said his 1997 Miata was a manual, and I didn't dig deeper. Ordered the manual version of the 37mm Koyo radiator. It bolted in perfectly. Then the customer drove up with an automatic—and the transmission cooler lines had no ports to connect to. We got it sorted with an external cooler, but the extra three hours of custom work came out of my pocket. Now the transmission question is the first thing on our phone intake form. The manual and automatic Miata use different Koyo radiator part numbers, and the difference isn't labeled clearly on the box.

Koyo K-swap radiator: when plug-and-play is a myth

The Koyo K-swap radiator is the product that makes engine swaps tolerable. A K-series engine moves coolant through the thermostat housing on a different side of the block than the Miata's BP. You can make a standard Miata radiator work with custom hoses and creative routing, but I've seen those hoses kink, leak, and cause air pockets. The K-swap version moves the inlet and outlet to match the K-series engine, so you stop fighting the cooling system and start driving the car. The install is fairly straightforward once the radiator is in hand.

The detail that still catches people: steam ports. The K-series cylinder head has two small coolant bleed ports. One sits at the front, one at the rear. We've had at least three cars trailered into the shop where the rear port was simply capped. The engine cools fine on city streets. Then highway speeds bring the temp gauge up, and the owner is confused. The fix, in our experience, is to route the rear steam port to the expansion tank connection on the Koyo K-swap radiator. That took us from solving about half of K-swap overheating complaints to solving about 90%. Why does this matter? Because a radiator can only cool what flows through it evenly—if air is trapped in the head, the radiator doesn't get a chance.

On dry pavement, it works. I'll be honest: I ran a welded diff on my personal car for a year and loved it on track. But I'll never forget the customer who welded his Miata diff, drove to work in a light rain, and ended up in a drainage ditch. No warning, no progressive slip. The diff just locked and the car swapped ends.

I have mixed feelings about recommending it. On one hand, it's cheap and genuinely effective for dedicated drift cars. On the other hand, it is a safety risk on public roads—especially in the wet. If your car is strictly track-only, go ahead. If you drive it to work, consider a clutch-type LSD instead. That's not a performance upgrade; it's a survival choice.

We've replaced a fair number of generic radiators that started leaking around the end tanks after two or three years. We've yet to see a Koyo fail in the same way. That's the real reason to spend the money, not for performance but for durability.

The industry has shifted a lot since 2019. Back then, the answer to every Miata overheating issue was 'bigger radiator.' Now, with K-swaps all over the place, we think in complete systems: the radiator, the steam port routing, the fan shroud, the ducting. What was best practice in 2020 isn't the whole story in 2025. The fundamentals haven't changed—coolant flow and airflow determine whether the system works. But the way we execute those fundamentals looks completely different.

Buy the right Koyo radiator for your specific engine and transmission combo, route the steam ports properly, and don't trust a part number when a caliper will tell you the truth.
