Stop Comparing Unit Prices. You’re Doing It Wrong.

I’m an emergency parts specialist. In my role coordinating rush orders for Tier 1 suppliers, I’ve processed over 200 critical jobs in the last three years. We lost a contract in 2022 because we tried to save $600 on standard Koyo stamped parts by using a “certified equivalent.” The part failed a fatigue test. The counter-argument is “It’s more expensive to do the TCO calculation than to just buy the cheapest.” But that ignores the asymmetry of cost. My Final Word: Switch to TCO Thinking

I’m not saying you should always buy the most expensive option. I am saying that if you’re just comparing the unit price of Koyo products, you’re getting a misleading picture.

Look at the total cost: the speed of delivery, the margin of safety, the rework potential, the relationship with a supplier who can handle the unexpected. I now calculate TCO before comparing any vendor quotes. It’s the only way to buy parts you can count on when the line is running and the clock is ticking.

Stop treating parts like commodities. Start treating them like risks.
