8 Things to Check When Sourcing Automotive Stamping Parts (A Buyer's Checklist)

If you're new to buying automotive stamping parts — or you're consolidating vendors and need a quick reference — this checklist is for you. It covers the eight things I wish someone had handed me back in 2020 when I took over purchasing for our manufacturing line.

I'm an office administrator managing roughly $2M annually across 12 vendors. My job is to keep production happy and finance compliant. After a few expensive mistakes (more on those below), I built this checklist. It won't make you an engineer, but it will help you ask better questions and avoid the most common sourcing traps.

Step 1: Verify the Die-Specific Experience

Not all automotive mold makers are the same. A supplier that builds dies for interior trim panels may struggle with structural stampings. Ask: “How many progressive dies have you built for parts in our application category (e.g., chassis, body-in-white, powertrain)?”

Why this matters: In 2022, I sourced a die from a general shop that claimed “20 years experience.” Turned out their experience was mostly appliance parts. The die had issues right away — excessive flash, short tool life. (We rushed it anyway because of the timeline… and ate the cost of a full rework.)

What to request: A portfolio of dies built for similar parts in the last 3 years. Not just any automotive die — one specific to your forming complexity.

Step 2: Validate CNC Machining Capabilities

Stampings often require secondary operations like drilling, tapping, or milling. That’s where CNC cars (or more accurately, CNC machining for automotive parts) come in. Some stamping houses outsource machining; others do it in-house. Each approach has trade-offs.

I assumed “same specifications” meant identical precision across vendors. Didn’t verify. Turned out one supplier’s ‘CNC finishing’ was a manual mill with digital readout — not true CNC car parts machining. The tolerance variation cost us a fitment issue later.

Ask: “Which operations are done on which CNC machines? What’s the repeatability spec (e.g., Cpk ≥ 1.33)?” If they can show you their recent PPAP data, even better.

Step 3: Confirm the Tonnage of Your Press Line

This might feel like engineering territory — and it partly is — but from a procurement perspective, knowing press tonnage prevents downstream surprises. A automotive industry stamping part that requires 600 tons on a 500-ton press? That’s a recipe for scrap.

Here’s the thing: I once ordered a progressive die set for a medium-depth draw part. The supplier said they had “appropriate presses.” Turned out their biggest press was 400 tons — we needed 550. We had to move the job to another vendor, losing six weeks. (Should have asked upfront.)

So put it in your RFQ: “List press tonnage, bed size, and stroke available for each proposed line.”

Step 4: Review Quality Certifications — But Don’t Stop There

ISO 9001 is table stakes. IATF 16949 is what you really want for automotive stamping suppliers. But certifications alone don’t guarantee consistent quality. I’ve dealt with shops that had IATF certs but still shipped mixed batches because their internal inspection system was weak.

Ask for their APQP/PPAP process and recent GP-12 (early production containment) results. If they can’t show you a sample dimensional report from a similar part within 24 hours, that’s a red flag.

(This gets into AIAG territory — not my expertise. I’d recommend your quality engineer dig in. But from a buyer’s view, if they’re slow to produce paperwork, they’re likely slow on other things too.)

Step 5: Understand Material Sourcing Flexibility

Steel prices fluctuate. In 2023, we saw a 30% swing in HRPO coil costs. Some suppliers passed all of it to us; others absorbed part because they had hedging agreements. A supplier that can source from multiple mills (domestic and import) is more resilient.

I said “use whatever material is standard.” They heard “use the cheapest available.” Discovered this when the final parts had inconsistent surface quality (rust spots). The material wasn’t CRS — it was a cheaper substitute. Now I always specify exact grade and ask for material certs.

Checklist item: Request their approved mill list and ask how they manage material substitutions.

Step 6: Evaluate Their Quoting Process

A sloppy quote is a preview of sloppy production. Look for:

  • Clear breakdown of tooling vs. piece price vs. engineering charges
  • Lead time with defined milestones (die design → fabrication → tryout → PPAP)
  • Revision history (has the quote been updated recently? or is it a copy-paste from 2021?)

In our 2024 vendor consolidation project, I evaluated 8 suppliers. One sent a one-page quote with no spec references. They were 20% cheaper. The numbers said go with them. My gut said something felt off. I went with my gut. Later learned they had a history of short-cutting PPAP — exactly the kind of risk I didn’t need with a strict launch schedule.

Step 7: Clarify Engineering Change Management

Changes happen — engineering revisions, design tweaks, material spec updates. How the supplier handles changes is critical. Some charge a flat fee per change order; others bill hourly. Some cap the number of revision loops before new tooling costs kick in.

I said “minor revisions included.” They heard “up to 3 rounds of CAD changes without limit.” We both used the same words but meant different things. Discovered this when invoice #2 arrived with $4,000 in “engineering time.” (Note to self: define “minor” and “revision” explicitly in the contract.)

Get it in writing: number of revision rounds, cost per revision, and the threshold for “major” changes (which typically require new tooling).

Step 8: Test Their Communication Cadence

Before awarding a large order, send a test email: “We’re considering your proposal. Can you provide a quick update on current lead times?” Measure response time and detail. If they take 3 days to answer a simple question during the sales phase, expect 5-day delays during production.

I had a supplier that took 48 hours to reply to my first query. In production, they missed every milestone deadline. Communication failure cost us a launch delay. Now I use response time as a proxy for operational rigor.

Between you and me, I’ve found that suppliers who respond within 4 hours with specific answers (not “we’ll check”) tend to be better organized overall. Not a hard rule, but a strong pattern.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Assuming all stamping shops can do progressive dies. Some specialize in single-station tools. Verify.
  • Forgetting about shipping constraints. Heavy dies are costly to ship. Get freight estimates upfront.
  • Leaving quality inspection to trust. Even with IATF, consider in-process gauging reports or SPC data.
  • Not planning for prototype vs. production transition. The supplier who built the prototype may not be best for high-volume production — or vice versa.

This checklist was accurate as of Q1 2025. The automotive industry stamping landscape changes fast — new materials, new press technologies, shifting supply chains — so verify the specifics before committing. (Prices and lead times vary; always get current quotes.)
