A Koyo Radiator 350Z, an S2000 Koyo Radiator, and an SBC Head Gasket: 36 Hours at the Shop

The phone rang at 7:14 p.m. on a Tuesday in late March 2025. I was already shutting down the parts counter when the shop owner handed me the phone with that look. 'The 350Z is getting a Koyo radiator, 350Z-specific,' he said. 'And grab an aftermarket turn signal kit while you're in there. The stock flasher module is dead and the OEM part is on national backorder.'

I'm the guy who handles rush parts at a performance shop. I've coordinated more than 200 of these in five years—maybe 180, I'd have to check the system. Most are straightforward. This one wasn't.

First, the 350Z

The Z was already on the lift. The stock radiator was older than most of our customers, and the cooling system had been topped off with water for way too long. The owner didn't want a generic replacement. He wanted the Koyo radiator 350Z owners talk about at track days: bigger core, clean welds, and a direct fit. Fair enough.

I confirmed the part number against the VIN's cooling package and placed the order. The tempting move was to buy a generic radiator and save about $120. The upside was small. The risk was a core that didn't cool as well, brackets that needed modification, and another conversation with a customer who had already paid for a Koyo radiator 350Z fitment. Missing the deadline would have meant missing the first round of the time attack series, and that wasn't a conversation I wanted to have.

Then I made the first mistake: I assumed the S2000 in the next bay needed the same radiator. It didn't. The outlet locations are on different sides, the cap pressure is different, and the mounting tabs aren't even close. I placed a second order for the S2000 Koyo radiator, which meant two delivery windows and no room for the shipping company to mess up. (Should mention: the delivery driver was not happy with me that week.)

The aftermarket turn signal kit

The stock flasher module for the 350Z was backordered with no ETA. The customer said he'd be fine with an aftermarket turn signal kit if it plugged in without cutting factory wiring. The listing said it fit '2003–2008 350Z models.' The actual product? Not even close.

They warned me about listing photos. I didn't listen. Now I ask for the wiring diagram before I place the order.

The first aftermarket turn signal kit had the wrong connector. The second one had the right connector, but the module was labeled for a Mazda. We ended up using a universal kit with a relay socket adapter. It worked, but it took two extra hours and one trip to the electronics supply store. If you're buying a turn signal kit, ask for the plug style and pinout first. The phrase 'universal' means you'll be cutting wires. Direct fit means there's a connector that should match.

Then the engine guy asked about SBC head gasket thickness

While I was waiting on radiator tracking numbers, our engine builder called. He was assembling a customer's small block Chevy, and the head gaskets in the kit were the wrong thickness. His question: what SBC head gasket thickness should he use?

This isn't a one-size-fits-all answer. The compressed head gasket thickness, plus the piston deck clearance, becomes the quench distance. For most street performance SBC builds, the target quench is somewhere around 0.040 to 0.050 inch. If the piston sits 0.025 inch down in the hole at TDC, a 0.015-inch steel shim gasket puts you at 0.040. If the block has been zero-decked, you might use a 0.041-inch composite gasket. Going thicker drops compression and adds piston-to-valve clearance. Going thinner raises compression and improves quench, but it's less forgiving if there's a valve clearance issue.

I told him to measure the piston-to-deck clearance before ordering anything. He did. We selected a Fel-Pro gasket with a 0.041-inch compressed thickness, and it was the right call for that rotating assembly. The exact SBC head gasket thickness depends on block deck height, valve reliefs, cylinder head chamber volume, and how much quench you want. Anyone who gives you a single number without measuring is guessing.

And then my fuel pump quit

Thursday morning at 6:30, my work truck wouldn't start. The engine cranked, but there was no fuel pump prime. A friend called at the same time and asked how to fix fuel pump issues on his van. I gave him the same checklist I was using myself:

  1. Check the fuel pump fuse and relay first.
  2. Listen for the pump prime when you turn the key to the ON position.
  3. Test fuel pressure at the rail with a gauge. Most port-injected V8s need 40 to 65 psi.
  4. Check the wiring and the inertia switch if the vehicle has one.
  5. If there's still no pressure, replace the pump and the filter together.

My truck had a blown fuse. I replaced it. Then the fuse blew again an hour later. That pointed to the fuel pump relay or the pump itself. The relay checked out, so I swapped the pump in the parking lot at 7:50 a.m. and still made it to the shop before the radiators arrived.

How it ended

Both radiators showed up by 11 a.m. The Koyo radiator 350Z fit without any bracket modification. The S2000 Koyo radiator was close—mounting tabs were about 2 millimeters off. Actually, closer to 3. We made a small shim from an aluminum extrusion and it fit fine. The turn signal kit took one extra wiring connector than expected. The SBC build got its head gasket and was ready for final assembly. And my truck ran again after a new fuel pump, even though I still think that first blown fuse was suspicious.

By Friday noon, both customer cars were ready. The track event went off without a cooling system failure, which is more than I can say for the original radiator that spent twenty years in a car without proper coolant service.

What I'd do differently

Looking back, I should have checked the S2000 part number during the first call. At the time, I assumed both cars used the same Koyo radiator because they have similar engine bay layouts. They don't.

I should have ordered the aftermarket turn signal kit with a wiring diagram before paying for expedited shipping. If I had asked one more question, I would have seen the listing photos weren't of the actual product.

And I should have already had a rush-order checklist. We didn't have a formal one, and that cost us two trips to the electronics store. Now we do. It's four lines: confirm the VIN, verify the photo, ask about connector pinout, and measure before you order engine parts. The third time I lost a morning to this kind of thing, I created the checklist. Should have done it after the first.

I'm not writing this to make myself look good. I'm writing it because an informed customer asks better questions and gets better results. When someone understands why SBC head gasket thickness isn't a marketing number, or why a Koyo radiator part number has to match a chassis code, the whole job goes faster. I'd rather spend ten minutes explaining that now than deal with a blown engine and a missed deadline later.
