Cheapest Isn't Cheaper: Why I'd Pay More for Koyo Radiators

I'll say it plainly: the cheapest part is rarely the cheapest part. That sounds like a bumper sticker, but after six years of tracking every purchase order in our procurement system, I've got the spreadsheet receipts to back it up.

  • Who pays for the second repair?

That last one is the deal-breaker. A part that needs a second repair is never a bargain, no matter how good the first price looked.

Bottom line

So, is Mobil 1 a good oil filter? It can be. Should you buy a 350Z Koyo radiator? If it fits your car and your budget, it's worth a serious look—but more importantly, look at the numbers behind it.

The exact part matters less than the way you evaluate it. The cheapest quote is not the final price. The most expensive one is not automatically bad. I'd rather have a ballpark number with every fee visible than a perfect number that changes after I sign. The only price that matters is the installed, working, still-working-a-year-later price. That's the number I want to see. That's the number I'll pay for.
