What a Bad Crankshaft Sensor Taught Me About Parts Suppliers Who Know Their Limits

Stalls. Won't start. Check engine light. If you're looking up "what are the symptoms of a bad crankshaft sensor," you probably need a diagnosis, not just a part. That's exactly why I believe every parts supplier needs to know what they don't know.

I coordinate emergency parts orders for automotive shops. In six years, I've handled 200+ rush orders, including same-day turnarounds for customers with a car on a lift and a deadline. In my role, I've learned that time is rarely saved by the supplier who says "yes" to everything. Time is saved by the supplier who asks the right questions.

A specialist who knows their limits beats a generalist who overpromises. Every time.

The "We Do Everything" Trap

From the outside, a supplier that can get any part looks like a hero. The reality? If they haven't asked about the vehicle, the year, the previous repair, or the actual symptom, their "yes" is a guess.

Take a Koyo intercooler. It's a common upgrade on turbo cars, but it is not a universal part. Core width, inlet and outlet orientation, end tank design, mounting points—all of that matters. I had a customer order a Koyo intercooler from a generalist because the price was 20% lower and it was listed as "fits turbo Subaru." It did not fit the car's rotated turbo setup. The part wasn't bad. The supplier just didn't ask.

The Call That Changed My Approach

In November 2023, a shop called about a Subaru STI with an overheating complaint. They needed an STI Koyo radiator shipped overnight. The part number seemed right. But I asked one question: "Have you checked the radiator fan fuse?"

Silence.

They hadn't. The radiator fan fuse was blown, which meant the fan wasn't running. A new radiator would not have fixed the car. The shop would have installed it, charged labor, and still had an overheating STI on the rack.

That call changed how I talk to customers. Before I quote a specialty part, I ask about the basics. It costs a minute and it saves thousands in unnecessary overnight shipping.

People assume a part like the STI Koyo radiator is just a big aluminum rectangle. They don't see the vehicle-specific engineering behind it. That's exactly why a good supplier will ask "did you check the fan before we ship this?" instead of just pushing the part.

Thermostats, Fuses, and the Limits of My Lane

I'm not a diagnostic technician, so I can't speak to every electrical gremlin. What I can tell you from the parts side is this: symptoms overlap.

If you search "test water heater thermostat," you'll get home heating tutorials. An engine coolant thermostat is a different part with a different temperature range, but a shop in a hurry might ask for "a thermostat test" and expect a simple answer. A specialist knows the difference—and knows when to say "that's outside what I can confirm from the part counter."

Same with a radiator fan fuse. It's a cheap part. But if you replace it and it blows again, the fuse was not the real problem. A shorted fan motor, a chafed harness, or a bad relay will keep taking fuses out. Selling the fuse without asking what happened after the last one blew is lazy selling.

I didn't always think this way. A few years ago, we tried to save money by using a discount vendor for a rush order. The vendor confirmed a part number without checking the production date. It arrived and didn't fit. The customer was furious. We paid the extra shipping, refunded the install, and ate the loss. That's when we implemented a simple rule: if we can't verify a fitment, we say so before we charge you.

What Are the Symptoms of a Bad Crankshaft Sensor?

Here's the question I get more than you'd expect. What are the symptoms of a bad crankshaft sensor? Usually:

  • Engine stalls at idle or while driving
  • No start, or cranks but does not fire
  • Intermittent misfire that seems electrical
  • Check engine light with P0335 or crank/cam correlation codes

But I've also seen a bad ground wire cause the exact same symptoms. I don't have hard data on industry-wide misdiagnosis rates, but based on 200+ rush orders, I'd guess one in ten emergency part orders is for a part the vehicle never needed. A supplier that asks for the code, checks whether the connector is seated, and looks at the wiring before selling the sensor is a supplier that respects your time.

But What About the One-Stop Shop?

To be fair, one-stop shops and broad suppliers have their place. Running a repair business means you don't want ten vendors for ten parts. I get that. But there's a difference between a supplier with a wide catalog and one that claims deep expertise on everything in it.

There's a reason FTC advertising guidelines require claims to be truthful and substantiated (ftc.gov). "We do everything" is an invitation to skip verification. "This part fits, probably" is not a promise. A supplier who tells you what they don't know is not being unhelpful—they're being honest. That honesty is worth more than a false "yes."

Bottom Line

The "find someone who can get it cheap" thinking comes from an era when parts were simpler. That's changed. Today, an intercooler has to match a specific airflow path. A radiator has to match a specific chassis. A crankshaft sensor needs a wiring check before it gets replaced.

I still sell a lot of Koyo intercoolers and STI Koyo radiators. They're great parts. But I'd rather lose a sale by asking a hard question than win a sale that comes back on a tow truck.

So when a supplier says "we can get it for you," ask what they know about your setup. And when they say "I'm not sure, but here's who does that better"—that's the supplier worth keeping.
